GOHOs in the Highlands

A bit of a lazy day today.  We got up and checked out of Fawlty Towers after a quick breakfast (avoiding the mouldy bread at the toast station). We went and found a coffee after checkout at a nice little local coffee shop and then headed up the hill of winding streets to see the view from McCaigs tower.  From here you can see right across the bay and see the different islands that make up the Inner Hebrides.

McCaigs Tower was built in 1897 by a local banker (McCaig) the aim of the tower was to provide work for the local stonemasons and a lasting monument to the McCaig Tower.  Obans very own colusseum.

It was a nice morning up there and a good spot for a few photos.

After McCaigs tower we headed north for Fort William.  This was only a short drive but a lot of beautiful scenery along the way.  Another tough day at the office for us.  I suspect there will be no shortage of nice scenery over the next week or so.

We arrived early and parked the car and headed for the main street to have a bit of a pootle, a look around and some lunch before heading back to the hotel to check in.

We found a free little museum about the importance of Fort William as a training area for the commandos during WW2.  Although the area is not an army base, the surrounding area was great landscape to train in for some of the special units due to the terrain.

The museum had some memorabilia from people who had trained in the area.  There was also a section in the museum about the Jacobites the role they have played in the Scottish history.  There was another section in the museum about the formation of Ben Nevis (the largest mountain in the UK) and what impact seismic activity and ice age etc have had in the formation of the surrounding landscape.  There was also a cannon ball that was most recently found in 2022.  So you can imagine what is still yet to be discovered.

After the museum we headed to a small pub and had a small lunch and a cheeky pint of course.  After lunch we found the train station where we need to go early tomorrow to catch the train to Mallaig for the day trip across the Harry Potter viaduct.  We found where we will need to park all day so that it is one less thing to worry about in the morning.

After all of that we headed to the hotel to check in (which started at 3pm).  We got there at 245pm and were told that not all rooms were ready yet and that we needed to come back on 15 mins.  So we went for another drive and found ourselves at the bottom of Ben Nevis (no we didn’t go hiking).  We then went back to hotel to check in 30 mins later.  We were allowed to check in this time.  We took our stuff up to the room, did a little washing and started watching some Netflix for a bit of a relax.  While mid episode the fire alarm went off.  We stood up and listened and stuck head out window as I could hear voices in the carpark.  All just a false alarm thankfully. So back to Netflix.

That’s all the excitement for you from our day today.  Hopefully we will have a few cool photos for you all tomorrow.

Ciao for now!
