It's been a gay old day...
Pretty quiet day from the GOHOs today. Bit of a sleep in and a small breakfast. After this we quickly headed back down the Shambles to head to the Fudge Kitchen and make a last minute purchase. Then slowly strolled back to the hotel this morning as the weather was quite nice, headed into the Harry Potter shop and had a look around but no purchases were made.
We packed the car up for the last time and hit the road to Manchester. We made a couple of quick stops on the way. Our first stop was in Halifax at Shibden Hall. Shibden Hall was the home to Anne Lister who was an English diarist, famous for revelations for which she was dubbed "the first modern lesbian." Her diaries were famous for many reasons, one being that they were partially written in code (the parts about her sexual escapades with women). Her diaries were discovered by the final inhabitant at Shibden Hall, John Lister (a descendent from the Lister line but not a descendent of Anne Lister). After this discovery by John (1890's), him and a friend managed to decipher the some of the code and discovered what was written. Upon this discovery, they were hidden behind a wall panel in Shibden Hall and were not found a decoded again until 1980's. John Lister ended up running out of money and handed the mortgages over to Arthur McRae and then donated to the Halifax Corporation, which opened it as a museum in 1934. The estate became a public park in 1926 and the hall a museum in 1934. There was a BBC drama series made about her life and love affairs and eventual "marriage" to Ann Walker.
After our trip to Shibden Hall we made our way to Manchester via Stalybridge (where Gordos mum was born). We went and found her old house, took a photo and headed to Manchester.
On arrival in Manchester we found our hotel, parked the car, settled in (put first load of washing on) and then went in search of food and a pint. We walked down Canal Street (Manchester's Gay Village) and settled on some yum cha for linner(lunch/dinner). We played a hand of cards while waiting for food, had a pint and then went for a walk. We walked along Market Street and then had another pint at the Manchester Live Hub in Piccadilly Gardens and listened to some DJ's and did some people watching. After this we went back to hotel to change the washing over for the next load and then put our feet up.
